Sofa TT 2005
Upholstered Sofa
Alias, Italy
Why do sofas look heavy and extremly deep, with big armrests and exaggerated proportions? With this design, I wanted to create a really light sofa that would defy the conventional. Maybe because lightness is one of my favourite keywords or possibly because «normal» houses never ressemble those you see in ads. For me, the most fascinating part of reasearch involved determining how to construct the base. This finally led to two T-shaped legs (hence, the name «TT») in cast aluminium being attached to a hard polyurethane foam-injected mould in shape of a very thin tray that supports the whole sofa. Discovering that such a technique actually worked, allowed us to reduce the height of the edge by 2 cm and ensure a maximum of 8 cm at the seat. The TT system includes single, 2-seater and 3-seater sofas without backs, or with high or low backs, characterized by their distinctive shape and harmonious proportions.
