Sketching My Own Landscape 2002
Autobiographical Book

Designer. Architect. Inventor. With this book, Argentine-Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli attempts to sketch his own landscape. The contours of his universe are lucid and tenuous. Häberli has a sharp eye for proportions, and rarely does he draw too much. His landscape is not in the least bit monotonous, but rich and varied. It features household products such as vases, CD holders and glassware, as well as countless pieces of furniture, storage systems and a lamp. Add to the scene a number of complete interiors and scores of exhibitions. But the most extraordinary thing about his landscape is the subtle and intelligent way in which it surprises you. At every turn, you get more than you expect. In Häberli's world a sofa is not only a seat, but also a place to work. A bar stool provides space for personal «city luggage». And for something as ordinary as a clothes hanger, he crafts a simple handle that makes the item easier to use. Alfredo Häberli not only provides objects with a physical form both beautiful and functional; he actually invents his designs. To use his own terminology, this makes him an excellent «landscape architect» whose private domain is a pleasant place to be.
